From 6 to 13 April, 15 students of the fourth forms and two teachers, Ms Bowen and Ms Stutzenstein, went on a language week to Edinburgh, which boasts one of the most stunning skylines in the UK. Although the journey was a bit bumpy – we had to stay overnight in Frankfurt because the plane was cancelled due to stormy weather conditions and some other challenges which the students dealt with heroically - we enjoyed our stay very much.
The students stayed with host parents and despite the fact that some lived rather far from the city centre they appreciated the conversations with the host parents a lot. “We are talking with our host mum about everything”, some students reported.
From Monday to Friday the students were taught by Iona, a young actress who had a lot of speaking activities and role plays in store for them. She also surprised us with her outfits because as soon as the sun came out, Iona arrived at school in summer clothes while we were still in winter jackets.
In the afternoons there were a lot of activities: we visited the Scottish parliament in Holyrood, enjoyed a guided tour of Edinburgh and up to Calton Hill with its National Monument (and amazing views!) or explored the Castle, the most iconic landmark in the city. One evening we visited Mary King`s Close – a maze of underground rooms off the Royal Mile, gaining insight into the hardships of life and the plague in 16th and 17th century Edinburgh
On Friday, after receiving their certificates, the group crossed the Firth of Forth and travelled to St. Andrews, the coastal town famous for golf and its most famous university students, William and Kate.
All in all, it was an exciting week and, despite experiencing all the highs and lows of European plane travel and the unpredictable Scottish weather, it was a memorable and enjoyable time for all of us.
